LifeKnocks is a Philadelphia based documentary which tells a story of the resilience of the human spirit. Inspired by a personal tragedy, the LifeKnocks song was created after the documenter took up the sport of boxing as a way to reduce the anger and sadness she felt after the death of a loved one. It was through meeting boxing champions that she was inspired to write lyrics which evolved into music and led to the LifeKnocks song. Through the music, an authentic boxing/hip-hop Choreography was created and a need to document that journey resulted in filming a music video. Through human connection it is MUSIC which has a universal ability to transform us through powerful lyrics. The LifeKnocks song and music video provide just the remedy for that type of empowerment. The documenter wanted to pay homage to the sport of boxing which got her back up again. This process from song to music video inspired the “LifeKnocks” team to follow the journey. The story follows the documenter as she turned to the sport of boxing as a way to channel her anger regarding a personal tragedy. It was in the boxing ring that she observed the commonality between boxing and dance. One could view a boxer’s movement in the ring much like a dance in life where the moves are carefully calculated. With a handful of musicians, the LifeKnocks song was created at Gamble & Huff International Recording Studios.

As a team of documenters we realized the music video was only the beginning of the LifeKnocks journey. After the music video shoot the project took on a life of its own and we followed and documented its journey. As we documented the journey we captured those individuals whose life experiences were shared on film and what began as a cathartic venture for the documenter encompassed a more global meaning toward the evolution of the project.

LifeKnocks is an award winning project which was entered into a contest at The University of Pennsylvania School of Law. The project was selected by the Law School panel and out of several hundred projects in Philadelphia it won as the most innovative and authentic project. The Law School awarded a 501-C3 nonprofit status which established an organization to benefit children by sending healthy children as well as those with challenges to have an educational experience by attending a theatrical camp of their choice sponsored by LifeKnocks. Medical research has proven that through imagery an individuals physical pain can be reduced for several hours through utilizing their creativity. Dr. Harry Shen of New York University Hospital had conducted experiments which have proven that a person with a medical condition can feel relief from pain by listening to music, writing, painting, performance art or through visualization. One’s mindset can be enhanced providing the mind, body and spirit to work cohesively thus empowering one to have the fortitude to get up and be productive. And through the power of imagery one can create a “new life force”.

We have all been knocked down by life’s circumstances, and through the power of resilience we “get back up”. The message of LifeKnocks is poignant not only to the Philadelphia community and its participants in the documentary, but to people everywhere. We as human beings step into the ring of life get knocked down, but through the resilience of the human spirit we get up once more.”
